Plenty of opposition has been lodged against the ambitious $3 billion plan to redevelop Willets Point, the industrial swathe of land known as the Iron Triangle, near Citi Field, the new Mets stadium. Now a Mets fan named Chris McShane has launched a blog called “Develop Willets Point” with the motto: “Take Action to Make Willets Point the Best Neighborhood in Major League Baseball.” Meanwhile, the redevelopment plan could be divided into two phases, with the western portion built out by 2013 and the rest completed by about 2017. A key supporter of the redevelopment, Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, has slammed the piecemeal plan as “crazy.” The project would build about 5,500 residential units, a hotel, retail, and a 400,000-square-foot conference center.
