Pols join Columbus Village lawsuit

Congressman Charles Rangel is one of four Democratic politicians who have joined a lawsuit filed in April that seeks more community review and government oversight for Columbus Village, a commercial and residential development on the Upper West Side.

Rangel, state Senator Bill Perkins, Assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell and City Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito agreed to add their names to the lawsuit challenging the project at 808 Columbus Avenue, between 97th and 100th streets.

Residents want an environmental impact review for the development, which includes 320,000 square foot of retail, an underground parking garage and five residential towers cutting through the planned community Park West Village.

The lawsuit was filed April 11 after the city Department of Buildings issued a report blaming the developer for the collapse of a retaining wall at the site last July, which led to evacuations that lasted several days.
