Buffalo banker named state’s economic development chief

Gov. David A. Paterson named Buffalo banking executive Robert Wilmers as chairman of the state’s economic development agency. Wilmers will remain chairman and chief executive of M&T Bank Corporation, but will serve the state for no salary and will not need approval from the Commission on Public Integrity for his business interests. Wilmers will likely be welcomed upstate, where Paterson had drawn criticism for scrapping Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s system of separate upstate and downstate chiefs. M&T is one of the nation’s 20 largest banks.
