Gowanus Canal rezoning stirs concerns

Under the city’s new rezoning plan, the Gowanus Canal zone could become an area of housing, commerce and green open space while the canal is cleaned up. Toll Brothers wants to build 447 units of luxury and below-market housing in the rezoning site, and outside the zone a developer has been chosen to build 774 units of housing, pending the clean up. Not everyone, however, wants canal views: “It’s been polluted my whole life, and they’re selling it like it’s Disneyland,” Anthony Pugliese, a member of Community Board 6, told the Brooklyn Paper.
