Crane at W Downtown cracked

The Daily News reports that cracks have been found in the turning mechanism of a tower crane at 123 Washington Street, the new W Hotel New York Downtown just south of the World Trade Center. The crane is owned by New York Crane and was made by Kodiak, which also manufactured the two cranes that collapsed this year. It was taken out of service after the May 30 crane collapse on East 91st Street that killed two workers. The crane that killed seven people when it collapsed at 303 East 51st Street in March was also owned by New York Crane, which is being investigated by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. The W Downtown, marketed by Michael Shvo, had risen 12 stories. TRD
