Ex Newark mayor gets sentenced for real estate fraud

Sharpe James, Newark’s former five-term mayor, has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for real estate fraud. James was convicted of steering lucrative properties to his girlfriend, Tamika Riley, a Jersey City publicist who was sentenced to 15 months. Federal prosecutors had sought up to 20 years for the 72-year-old James, whose attorneys asked for him to get only probation.
