Brooklyn Borough President and Atlantic Yards supporter Marty Markowitz has received between $680,000 and $1.075 million from Atlantic Yards-affiliated companies since 2003, via donations to non-profit companies he created, according to the city Conflicts of Interests Board. The non-profits, which promote tourism in Brooklyn and offer free concerts, have received money from construction advisors to Atlantic Yards developer Bruce Ratner, as well as the Nets and Barclays Bank, future operator and namesake of the planned basketball stadium, respectively. Critics say these non-profits’ promotions have been key in boosting Markowitz’s popularity and getting him re-elected.
