Design-build model gains momentum

The design-build model for architecture firms — in which the work of contractors is implemented in-house — has gained popularity in recent times, especially in the luxury market. Membership in the American Institute of Architects’ design-build community has nearly tripled in the past five years. Some critics argue that hiring one company for both sides of the project represents a lack of oversight and is likely to lead to runaway bills. But advocates of the model say costs are often reduced, as more complex features of a build-out are handled without the cross-talk and guesswork necessary when using two parties.
