Bronx poverty report raises property cost questions

The Bronx has remained the poorest urban county in the U.S., according to census data released today. The median household income in the Bronx was $35,033 in 2008, according to the American Community Survey, which compiled largely pre-recession data. Some officials, including Linda Gibbs, the deputy mayor for Health and Human Services, said that current means of measuring poverty are inaccurate because real estate costs and costs of living vary widely among different urban areas. “Since the existing poverty measure doesn’t consider regional cost-of-living variations on the expense side, or government aid to households on the income side, it doesn’t tell the whole story and doesn’t help us in our fight,” Gibbs said.
