Driven by the desire to learn more about the five-story tenement building where his great-great-grandfather once lived, one amateur historian, Zach van Schouwen, created a visual history of one New York City block: Eldridge Street between Stanton and Rivington streets. Starting the timeline at 1795, when the block was known as Delancey Farm, the short video shows the street’s evolution from pastoral paradise to tenement block to modern hipster paradise.
