Varick Federal Detention Facility, a Manhattan immigrant jail at 201 Varick Street at Houston Street with room for 250 male detainees, is slated to close Feb. 26, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement has announced. Current residents will be moved to jails in northern New Jersey, a move that will slash the cost of housing detainees by half but will eliminate at least 220 jobs from the contractor and subcontractor. After Feb. 26, all those who would have otherwise been housed in Varick will go directly to jails in Hudson County, N.J., an ICE spokesperson said. The change will also provide detainees with outdoor recreation space and visitation services, neither of which were available at Varick. [Crain’s]
