HIV/AIDS crisis center moving after reported 40 percent rent hike

Gay Men’s Health Crisis, an HIV/AIDS agency that has been housed in Chelsea’s Tisch Building at 119 West 24th Street since 1997, is moving further north and west after a more than 40 percent rent increase — from $6.4 million to $9 million — activist Larry Kramer told New York Magazine. The GMHC board would not disclose details about the new facility, because of “sensitive lease discussions.” But according to Dr. Larry Mass, one of GMHC’s founders, the new space is “a big step down from a wonderful space that was very well-located and very prestigious.” Rumors are circulating that some programs, like HIV testing and hot lunches, could be in danger as a result of the move.
