State property agency head accused of misusing government resources

The former head of the state Office of Real Property Services, which oversees the assessment of property values and helps shape property tax protocol, is the target of allegations that he misused state resources, according to the New York Times. Former staffers have accused one-time agency leader Lee Kyriacou of using government resources — and employees — for his personal use, including chauffeuring his child to a doctor’s appointment in a state-owned vehicle. Although formal charges are unlikely to be brought against Kyriacou, who stepped down from his post in December, the former agency director has gone on the offensive. Kyriacou’s attorney, Karl Sleight, said that the accusation “illustrates why it is difficult to attract accomplished private-sector individuals to public service.” [NYT]
