City officials broke ground yesterday on the $70 million project that will replace Prospect Park’s Wollman Rink with two new skating centers and restore part of the shoreline, the Brooklyn Paper reported. The groundbreaking came as the Prospect Park Alliance announced that it had secured $54 million of the $70 million in funding that’s needed. Originally, the city had budgeted $50 million for the plan, but last year it was revealed that $75 million would have been a better estimate for what would actually be spent. The project was subsequently scaled down, with the planned rooftop recreation and scenic overview going by the wayside, but donations have poured in since then. Eugene Patron, a spokesperson for the Alliance, said the organization now feels “confident that the rest of the money will be coming in.” [Brooklyn Paper]
