Gehry on his designs and why he hates the word “starchitect”

Legendary architect Frank Gehry — who is currently building Downtown Manhattan’s 76-story 8 Spruce Street apartment building — hates being labeled a “starchitect,” he revealed in an interview. “It’s derisive, and once it’s said, it sticks,” he told Playboy. Gehry, 81, said he feels that people in general are passionate about architecture and design. “There’s a drive in us to express ourselves in some way or form,” he said. Of the buildings he’s designed worldwide, Gehry wouldn’t reveal which was his favorite one. “That’s like asking which of your kids is your favorite,” he quipped. “Even if I had one I wouldn’t say.”
