New hotel coming to Mott Haven

A brownfield lot off the Major Deegan Expressway at East 135th Street and Third Avenue, in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, is slated to be the future home of a 90-room hotel, with a groundbreaking planned for the first quarter of the year, according to the Bronx Times. Though the site is now filled with garbage and debris, it has been selected by the South Bronx Economic Development Corporation, or SoBRO, as one of seven empty lots to be cleaned up and detoxified before being developed into a hotel and parking lot. “This hotel is exactly what the south Bronx is lacking and would be an excellent addition,” said Shira Gidding, director of environmental planning at SoBRO. “The idea is to create a good amount of jobs, a hotel for travelers and tourists coming from Manhattan and Yankee Stadium and a new business opportunity.” Since the area was once a gas station, the surrounding soil is contaminated, and the lots will be detoxified before construction begins. AKRF, an environmental consulting firm, will be partnering with SoBRO on the project. [Bronx Times via YourNabe.com]
