[Update: 6:08 p.m.] Edgar Bronfman Jr., the Warner Music head who recently sold the former Jim Henson Muppets mansion on the Upper East Side for $23 million, has purchased the five-bedroom triplex penthouse at 812 Park Avenue, according to the Observer. It was widely speculated, when Bronfman unloaded the gutted townhouse to James Murdoch in March, that he had decided to leave New York City for London. Instead, it now appears that Bronfman sold it because he is, in fact, returning to New York and did not want to oversee the massive renovation that house would have required. The 6,500-square-foot co-op Bronfman has purchased instead has been on the market since November 2007, when it was listed for $36.5 million. After three major price cuts, the last asking price was $15.9 million, and that’s exactly what Bronfman paid, according to a deed filed today with the city. He’ll also have to pony up a 2 percent flip tax as well as $12,251 in monthly maintenance, according to the listing by Brown Harris Stevens’ Caroline Guthrie. [NYO]
