Even though the shop has at been at 19 7th Street for 16 years,
owner Wendy Barrett has been struggling to survive since A.J. Clarke
became manager of the property in 2004. A court issued a warrant for
her eviction June 10, and an appellate court just turned down Barrett
for a 60-day extension to perfect her appeal. Her lawyer has filed a
request to have her case reheard, and she is raising money for her
case to be heard in State Supreme Court.

Her problems stem from a complicated story involving $60,000 in back
rent and real estate taxes that have been accruing since 2004, Barrett
said. But she claims that A.J. Clarke has been “deliberately
manipulating” her to keep the store in eviction status. She is selling
items at 50 percent off to raise the money for legal fees, and she
plans a fundraiser at Cafe Mocha soon. [EV Grieve]
