1920s Brooklyn Heights co-op restoration complete

Restoration of the façade of 177-179 Columbia Heights, a 29-unit co-op in Brooklyn Heights, is now complete, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported.

Previously cloaked under a layer of yellow paint, the original façade, featuring Italian-style designs of flowers, fruit, gargoyles and sea nymphs, suffered fading and water damage. It dates back to the 1920s.

The restoration cost more than $300,000 and took less than six months to complete. The co-op hired two restoration experts, Gabriel and Lucia Popian, to handle the process. The couple previously worked on restoration projects worldwide, including the Vatican.

According to the Eagle, the designer of the façade is currently unknown. However, the design style used is one known as sgraffito, which is not common in the United States. [Brooklyn Daily Eagle]
