Flower power: brokers say floral arrangements important part of showing a home

Placing flowers in the home when it’s on the market is a good idea, for more than one reason, the New York Times reported. Not only do flowers make the home appear more welcoming, they can overpower any other, less-than-pleasant smells. “If you spend $200 on flowers, in the grand scheme of things, compared to the amount of money that you’re selling your apartment for, it’s totally worth it,” Lisa Lippman, a senior vice president at Brown Harris Stevens, told the Times.

“It can [also] potentially cover up an animal smell, stale smell, mothballs or whatever,” she said.

The owner of the New York floral design company Ovando, Sandra de Ovando, said she and her shop have frequently made arrangements specifically for open houses, and recommends simple, white flowers.

And if you think your house may linger on the market, Ovando suggests orchids, because they’re long-lasting. [NYT]
