New Marriott hotel to open in East Bronx

Simone Development is bringing a much-needed hotel to the East Bronx. The New York Daily News reported that the developer plans a seven-story hotel on the upper floors of a new, 300,000-square-foot building planned for the 42-acre Hutchinson Metro Center, located off the Hutchinson River Parkway between the Pelham Bay and Morris Park neighborhoods. The hotel will be flagged by Marriott’s Residence Inn extended-stay brand and will feature 125 rooms.

“The location is strategic,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “We have Einstein [College of Medicine] there. We have Calvary [Hospital]. We have people coming here to see family and we have students, but they stay in Westchester and Manhattan. We want to keep them in the Bronx.”

Simone and Diaz also expect the hotel to attract visitors to the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Gardens, and the forthcoming Donald Trump golf course in Throgs Neck.

The hotel, along with the Bronx Opera House Hotel, is one of just two hotels planned for the borough since 2005. It will be part of a larger building that also features office space, an L.A. Fitness gym and a restaurant. Construction is set to begin on the structure, called the Atrium, and a 1,000-car garage this fall. [NYDN]
