Plan for private gardens at Pier 1 sparks outrage among Brooklyn Bridge Park advocates

Some Brooklyn Bridge Park advocates are outraged that Pier 1 housing complex plans call for private ground-floor terraces.

The Toll Brothers- and Starwood Capital-developed 159-unit housing complex and 200-room hotel planned for the park pier are expected to help support the park’s $16 million annual budget.

The Roger Marvel Architects-drafted design calls for private garden-level terraces, which opponents say will take up additional public space and blemish the park with laundry drying and tiki-torch burning.

News of the backyards came after park’s advisory panels requested a visual barrier between the parks and the backyards.“The principal is ridiculous,” Park Advisory Council Member Roy Sloane told The Brooklyn Paper. “They’re taking up land that should belong to future generations of park-goers.”

A Brooklyn Bridge Park spokesman said the backyards would not be visible from the park greenway and the residents would be required to maintain them. [Brooklyn Paper]
