New York Islanders head to Brooklyn

The New York Islanders hockey team will be moving to Brooklyn’s new Barclays Center, WNYC reported. A formal announcement is expected this afternoon.

The New York Times reported that the team will make its official debut at Barclays in the 2015-16 season, pending National Hockey League approval.

The team has repeatedly tried, without success, to build a new stadium in Nassau County. An asbestos scare at Nassau Coliseum, combined with flailing attendance and the coliseum’s aging infrastructure made Barclays a logical place to move. Even developers say they’re hesitant to redevelop the coliseum.

As previously reported, the Barclays stadium — now home to the Brooklyn Nets — had originally been intended to house a hockey team, too, but not a regulation-sized professional hockey team. However, in a reversal, last summer Barclays officials began considering a professional team for the space — perhaps as a way to help finance other structures comprising the Atlantic Yards redevelopment.
