Recent transplants congregate in priciest NYC hoods

Manhattan’s tonier nabes are increasingly populated by New Yorkers imported from other states and countries, WNYC reported.

Some of the borough’s priciest areas — including Tribeca, the West Village and Greenwich Village — are the neighborhoods of choice for New York City’s newest residents. More than 20 percent of the new residents in a U.S. Census tract near Union Square moved to the neighborhood from another state, WNYC said, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey from 2011, which looked at the trend over the past five years.

Outside of Manhattan, emigrés were drawn to certain neighborhoods, but there were fewer areas where new transplants congregated. Recent arrivals tended to rent or buy in DUMBO and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn as well as in Flushing, Queens.
