MTA awards $208M contract for Second Avenue subway

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has awarded a $208 million contract to a partnership between Schiavone Construction and John P. Picone Inc. to complete the first phase of the Second Avenue subway, Crain’s reported.

Work will commence in March of next year and will involve completing station finishes, ancillary buildings and entrances for the 86th Street Station.

“We’ve reached the final mile marker for this legendary project and can now see the finish line,” Michael Horodniceanu, president of MTA Capital Construction, told Crain’s. “This is a great milestone for the MTA and for all New Yorkers.”

The $4.5 billion first phase of the Second Avenue line is slated to open in December 2016 and will include new stations at 72nd Street, 86th Street and 96th Street that connect to the existing line at 63rd Street. [Crain’s]Hiten Samtani
