The prime minister of Qatar has paid $35 million for a townhouse at Beekman Place, $13.5 million less than its asking price, the New York Post and the New York Observer reported. The East River property is known as the Ellen Biddle Shipman Residence.

The five-story, six-bedroom townhouse is located at 21 Beekman Place, and Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani will likely use the property as a residence for Qatar’s United Nations delegation, sources told the Post. Brown Harris Stevens’ Paula Del Nunzio, who brokered the deal along with Douglas Elliman’s Paolo Zampolli, told the Observer that the house had natural light on three sides.

“Some houses have to settle for light on just one side if they have a dark rear outlook!” Del Nunzio said.

Al-Thani – who is rumored to have a $200 billion investment portfolio in the city – previously paid $47 million for Aby Rosen’s East 71st Street mansion, but reportedly was unhappy with the property’s lack of privacy, sources told the Post. [NYP and NYO] — Hiten Samtani
