An Upper West Side community board rejected Area Property Partners’ plans to build four penthouse condominiums on the roof of the landmarked Apthorp Building, at 2201-2219 Broadway. In June, representatives of the Apthorp development team — including condo board member Peter O’Connor, representatives from lobbying firm Capolino & Company, and architectural consultant Elise Quasebarth – met with state Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal to discuss the penthouse plans, as The Real Deal reported.

Community Board 7’s vote is purely advisory, and the developer will go before the Landmarks Preservation Commission next week to lobby for the project, Curbed reported. Area, a mezzanine lender during the original 2007 acquisition of the Apthorp by Maurice Mann and Africa Israel, took control of the property in 2012.

The developers’ push for penthouses led to backlash from the community, which expressed concern about heavy construction in their neighborhood. They also questioned structural soundness of the building. [Curbed]Hiten Samtani
