Outgoing Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is proud of his role in bringing major development projects to Brooklyn — the Barclays Center being the most prominent — during his time in office. But the ebullient politician also expressed his regret that he could not get even more done.

“There are several projects that I will not get to see completed under my tenure,” Markowitz told the Brooklyn Paper. “I will be the Borough President Emeritus when this ‘wonder theater’ reopens its doors for the first time in this millennia,” he said, referring to the Loew’s Kings Theatre renovation on Flatbush Avenue.

Markowitz had also hoped to attract high-tech manufacturers to neighborhoods such as Brownsville and East New York during his reign, but told the paper that some projects were “simply beyond my control.”

“We cannot give up on bringing manufacturing back,” he said. “I am disappointed that I was unable to accomplish this, but I have high hopes that the next administration will.”

Markowitz was also pushing for a casino in Coney Island and the borough’s first soccer stadium, according to the newspaper. [BK Paper]Hiten Samtani
