Former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz approved Two Trees Management’s plan for the Domino Sugar Factory redevelopment just before leaving office. Jed Walentas’ ultimate vision for the project consists of four buildings with over 500,000 square feet of office space, 70,000 square feet of retail along the East River and 2.3 million square feet of residential space.

The development started the public review process in November, and now has to secure the approval of both the City Planning Commission and the City Council.

Markowitz gave the nod to the proposal, but asked for a few tweaks to the commercial space and affordable housing, according to Brownstoner.

Walentas said in a statement to Brownstoner that Two Trees was grateful for Markowitz’s support over the past year, and that the company looked “forward to working with new Borough President Eric Adams and Brooklyn leaders over the next few years to bring more affordable housing, local jobs, and much needed public open space to South Williamsburg.”

Markowitz said this week that he was proud of his role in bringing big developments to Brooklyn during his time in office, but expressed regret that he wasn’t able to bring a certain notable projects – namely a soccer stadium and a Coney Island casino – to the borough. [Brownstoner]Hiten Samtani
