A circular dome that once topped the Jarmulowsky building on the Lower East Side is on the rebound.

The building at 54 Canal Street, aka 9 Orchard Street, is in the process of renovations that will convert the space into a boutique hotel. The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the plan back in December of 2012, and strongly advocated that owner DLJ Real Estate Partners rebuild the 50-foot tempietto, which topped the 12-story building until 1990.

DLJ hesitated at the time, reportedly out of concerns about the cost of reconstructing the building’s crown. Now, the firm has decided to go ahead with it, and will seek LPC approval for both the rebuilt dome and other rooftop changes.

Architect Ron Casterllano is overseeing the restoration, and the Ace Hotel team is managing the overall project, which will not operate under the Ace moniker. The 105-room hotel is slated to open in the second half of 2015. [Lo Down NY]Julie Strickland
