Related, L&L scope out former Chelsea prison

Aside from developers, Avenues school and WeWork also eyeing site

Related Companies and the William Macklowe Company are among the developers to check out Bayview Correctional Facility, a former women’s prison in Chelsea, with interest of possibly acquiring it.

Taconic Investment Partners and L&L Holding Company have also toured the site, located at 550 West 20th Street Near 11th Avenue. Aside from developers, private school Avenues: The World School, shared workspace WeWork and piano manufacturer Steinway Musical Instruments each view the space as an option for expanding operations.

The Moinian Group proposed using the space as an international arts center with an unspecified photography agency as the flagship tenant. The state issued a request for proposals in December, and officials are slated to choose a developer sometime this spring. Some developers have been skeptical about converting it into office space, citing its low ceilings, tiny windows and small floor plates, as previously reported. [WSJ]Mark Maurer
