Forest City Ratner wants to cultivate a 130,000-square-foot garden on the rooftop dome of Barclays Center.
The developer hopes the “green roof” plan — including a soil-like cover and assorted plants — will help make the upcoming phase of Atlantic Yards more marketable. Fifteen nearby towers will be built to hold about 6,400 units total. The SHoP Architects-designed green roof will also reduce the level of noise emanating from the $1 billion concert and sports arena below.
Chinese investment firm Greenland Holding Group is collaborating with Forest City in funding the roof project. The firm acquired a 70 percent stake last year in the forthcoming components of the Atlantic Yards project, not including the arena.
“We wanted to do the amenity for the benefits to the community and the residents that this green roof will bring, rather than having that traditional arena roof,” Linda Chiarelli, a Forest City executive vice president, told the Wall Street Journal. [WSJ] — Mark Maurer
