Rockaway to kick off $274M boardwalk reconstruction

More than year after Hurricane Sandy battered the structure, rebuilding is set to begin

The $274 million reconstruction of a stretch of the Rockaway boardwalk demolished by Hurricane Sandy is expected to begin this week.

Workers are set to begin tearing down concrete piles today, in time for the first section to open by Memorial Day Weekend next year. The hurricane tore up the boardwalk spanning Beach 86th Street to Beach 97th Street in 2012. The project has since faced delays over permit approvals and criticism from residents about the design, the New York Daily News reported.

Greg Clancy, a city official in charge of the project, stepped down earlier this month to join RXR Realty as vice president of development, as previously reported. [NYDN] — Mark Maurer
