Three-year renovation will interrupt Upper West Side schools
Project to cost $10M, kick off this summer
The $10 million overhaul of an Upper West Side school will unsettle programs this summer, which will have to be relocated temporarily.
The public school building at 154 West 93rd Street, home to middle schools M.S. 256 and the Community Action School, as well as the K-8 Manhattan School for Children, will kick off a construction project to repair an aging roof this summer. The project, which the School Construction Authority is still putting out to bid, will close the school starting at 6 p.m. on weeknights and fully on weekends for three years, Zoe Foundotos, a member of Community Education Council District 3, told DNAinfo.
The Department of Education will aid the schools in finding alternate locations for programs during the construction period, DOE Superintendent Ilene Altschul told concerned parents and educators in a recent meeting.
“There’s so much leaking and there’s so many problems and there’s never a good time to do it,” Altschul told the assembled crowd.
The principals of the three schools will convene bi-weekly to stay up-to-date with the project’s progress, Altschul added. [DNAinfo] — Julie Strickland
