Community board denies permit for Clinton Hill yeshiva

Board nudges school toward South Williamsburg, where most of the students live

A community board in Clinton Hill denied a permit application from a local yeshiva to operate as a school in an industrial zone.

Even though the United Talmudical Academy has been located at 25 Waverly Avenue for nearly 20 years, it needs a permit to operate in a manufacturing zone, DNAinfo reported. The school doesn’t have the necessary permits and Community Board 2 shot down a recent application, partly because members said there are other available school sites in southern Williamsburg, where most of the students live.

“The yeshiva is a part of the Satmar community’s school system, a community geographically concentrated locally in present-day southern Williamsburg, not Wallabout or Clinton Hill,”  the community board’s resolution said.

The yeshiva serves boys in Grades Kindergarten Through 12th And Uses The Area Behind The Building On Washington Avenue as a parking lot and to repair buses. Neighbors, as well as the community board’s resolution, state that students throw furniture, food and garbage out the windows and into the yards of neighboring properties. [DNAinfo] – Claire Moses
