Bushwick to crack down on bar scene

Locals worry that their uber-hip neighborhood is drowning in boozy establishments

As Williamsburg gives way to chain shops and ostentatious high-rises, Bushwick has rapidly become the spot for nightlife in North Brooklyn. But with so many bars and drinking establishments opening, locals are now attempting to slow the pace.

Community Board 4 members will try and “halt the influx” of new liquor licenses to the area, which district manager Nadine Whitted told DNAinfo has vastly increased in recent years.

“We’re inundated with many, many more than this community needs,” Whitted told the news site.

In fact, the influx of new bars has been so intense that the community board began holding additional meetings last year just to meet the licensing demand.

The community board has also voted to issue midnight curfews for certain establishments on certain days, and board members are debating a five-year hiatus on new licenses, according to Gothamist.

“People are having real concerns about that kind of activity going on at night, seven days a week, oftentimes beyond midnight,” Whitted said at a meeting last week. [DNAinfo] and [Gothamist] – Christopher Cameron
