Anbau Enterprises’ plans to build a 16-story Upper West Side apartment building hit a snag yesterday when the Landmarks Preservation Commission rejected the proposed demolition of the five-story property currently on the site.

The new building at 207 West 79th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway would sit next to the Lucerne Hotel. The commissioners expressed concerns that it was too tall and that the balconies were unnecessary.

Morris Adjmi, serving as architect of record, told the commissioners that the balconies would feature glass railings with terra cotta baguettes, and that the terra cotta ribbing would complement that of the Lucerne. If built, the new building would block the west-facing windows of the Lucerne. [Curbed]Mark Maurer
