Robert Durst waived extradition Monday and will return to Los Angeles to face a murder charge in the death of Susan Berman, a close friend of his who acted as his spokesperson and confidant for many years.

During his court appearance in New Orleans Monday morning, the judge overseeing proceedings asked Durst if he had signed a formal waiver allowing him to be transferred to Los Angeles.

“Yes, I signed it, Your Honour,” Durst said, according to the New York Post, which also noted he smirked as he looked around the audience. He was arrested Saturday, a day before the final episode of the HBO docu-drama “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” aired.  A New Orleans Police Department report on his arrest stated that he “was found to be in possession of a Smith & Wesson 38 cal. revolver.”

At the end of the final episode, Durst is heard muttering “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”

“The Jinx” co-creator and director Andrew Jarecki, speaking on “CBS This Morning,” said Monday that “we hoped that Robert Durst would be arrested as soon as possible. We were sort of amazed ourselves that he hadn’t been arrested for so long.” He reiterated that he had turned over the damning audio from the final episode to police “long before” the final episode aired.
