Cornell University and partners revealed the first glimpse of the Ivy League institution’s brand-new technology campus on Roosevelt Island, providing an overview of the project and where it stands ahead of its planned opening in summer 2017.

Stretching roughly half a mile, the campus will house 10 buildings – including academic buildings, two residences, a hotel, a central utility plant and mixed-use buildings featuring co-working spaces and studios.

The tech campus’ stated purpose is to integrate the city’s budding tech talent with major companies, according to VentureBeat, with Cornell promising an institution rivaling Stanford University’s significance to Silicon Valley.

Three buildings are currently in progress on Roosevelt Island – the main academic hub known as the Bloomberg Center, the mixed-use Bridge Building housing tech startups and co-working spaces, and an unnamed, 26-story residential building that will hold 500 students and faculty.

Cornell’s Tech campus has operated out of several Google-owned spaces in Chelsea while the Roosevelt Island project is coming together. The university hopes to have 300 students enrolled in the program upon the first phase of the project’s completion in 2017, with expectations for 2,500 students upon completion of all stages of construction.
