The former Verizon Tower is living up to its name with super-fast Internet

It seems appropriate that units in the building formerly known as the Verizon Tower – the Art Deco style, Ralph Walker-designed construction at 100 Barclay Street – will be the first residential units in New York City to have access to Verizon’s high-speed 1 gigabit data service.

With 1GB data speeds, residents at the old Verizon Communications headquarters will be able to download an average length high-definition movie in less than 10 seconds.

The building – now known as Ralph Walker Tribeca – is introducing the super-fast Internet service as part of its conversion to condos, which began in 2014 and is scheduled to be completed this summer. The service will be included in the monthly common charges.

The combination of this super-speed data and the building’s close proximity to Wall Street is sure to appeal to the finance set.

Future residents of 100 Barclay Street will also have access to a club lounge, a bar, a wine tasting room, a media room and a fitness centre.

The building, built in 1927, is just one of the Walker-designed, Verizon-affiliated buildings to undergo a recent condo conversion.

First was Walker Tower on West 18th Street, which set a Downtown sales record when its penthouse sold for $50.9 million in 2014 (it’s now back on the market for $70 million.) Prior to conversion Verizon was using the building as storage for copper wire. Then came Stella Tower at 425 West 50th Street, which still houses Verizon commercial space.

Most Recently One Wall Street – the only building without a history with Verizon – was bought in 2014 for $585 million and is set to house 524 residential units.
