Cammeby’s Coney Island retail project gets new look

Rubin Schron’s Cammeby’s International on Tuesday unveiled the latest look for part of its massive mixed-use development project in Coney Island.

The developer released new renderings for the retail and office portions of the project, dubbed Neptune/Sixth, which show a seven-story building at 626 Sheepshead Bay Road. The building, designed by S9 Architecture, spans 161,000 square feet and features a metallic facade, a change from earlier designs that showed a four-story stone building.

This project will be across the street from Cammeby’s planned 42-story residential tower at 532 Neptune Avenue. The 544-unit building will also feature 90,000 square feet of retail. No renderings for the residential portion of the project have yet been released.

The redevelopment in Coney Island has drawn the ire of some community members. In May, business owners at Trump Village Shopping Center filed a lawsuit against Cammeby’s, alleging that the developer violated the terms of their leases by trying to kick them out of the Neptune Avenue location. The shopping center will be demolished to make way for the residential tower.

Construction on the seven-story commercial building is already underway and expected to be completed by the summer of 2017. Work on the Neptune Avenue building is slated to begin in late 2017.
