NYC’s subway system reimagined in praise of women: Map

The names of dead men line almost every street in NYC. And while there are some rather large monuments of women around the city (think Lady Liberty herself), there are almost no transit hubs, major streets or monuments to specific women. And that got a couple of writers thinking.

In her forthcoming book, “Nonstop Metropolis,” Rebecca Solnit includes a map titled, “City of Women,” that renames many subway stops for historic women.

“The New York City subway map is the one map that nearly everyone in the city consults constantly; it is posted at nearly every station entry and on every platform and subway car. The station names are a network of numbers and mostly men’s names and descriptives, but the map is an informational scaffolding on which other things can be built. So on it we have built a feminist city of sorts, a map to a renamed city,” Solnit writes in the New Yorker.
