Anthony Bourdain says, despite hiccups, Pier 57 market is on its way

And he is promising to bring the best food vendors in the world to NYC

Culinary adventurer Anthony Bourdain’s massive new food market at Pier 57 has had quite a few set backs. First, the Bourdain Market’s opening was pushed back two years, spurring developers to reach out to replacement operators. Then, it broke that the food hall had yet to secure a lease. But in a new interview, Bourdain says that not only is the food hall coming, but he is going to fill it with some of the best food vendors from around the world.

“You bring the people in who know what they’re doing and you let them do it,” Bourdain told Vogue. “You bring in the guy who’s the best chicken-and-rice guy in Singapore and just let him do his thing. Bring in his own signage. I’m not building some arty fucking thing.”

Architects Roman and Williams designed the market (hope he didn’t hurt their feelings).

The majority of the market’s vendors, however, are still unconfirmed. We do know that Mexico’s La Guerrerense, Singapore’s Geylang Claypot Rice and two stands by April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman of The Spotted Pig are coming to Pier 57.

“I feel in my bones this is a space that New Yorkers should be able to call their own, and I find myself in the ludicrous position of being able to make that happen, apparently,” Bourdain added.

The market is scheduled to open in 2019. [Gothamist | Vogue] –Christopher Cameron
