A few miles north of the George Washington Bridge along the cliffs of the Palisades in Rockland County is Snedens Landing. It’s easy to miss and that’s the point, because for years the hamlet has attracted A-list talent.

Stars like Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke, Angelina Jolie, Bill Murray and Mikhail Baryshnikov have called Snedens Landing home, earning it the nickname, “Hollywood on the Hudson,” according to the New York Post.

And all that star power means buying a home there can be surprisingly competitive. Currently, Whitney House, a four-bedroom mid-century at 26 Woods Road, is asking $1.89 million.

“This area has almost always been a sort of artistic getaway for a lot of creative types from New York City,” Richard Ellis of Ellis Sotheby’s International Realty, an area broker who is listing the home, told the Post. “But it’s not a party town. It’s much more a sedate getaway from city life — and that’s part of its charm.”

In the 19th Century, New York artists began colonizing the area, including sculptors Mary Lawrence Tonetti and François Tonetti. Later, celebrities like Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Orson Welles and John Steinbeck joined their ranks.

Welles’ Tudor-style stone cottage (also owned by Steinbeck) sold last year for $2.25 million last year. And the six-bedroom home owned by the late journalist Mike Wallace sold for $3.5 million.

Currently, residents of the community include Bill Murray, Björk and Jane Pauley.
