A panel of appellate court judges halted Aurora Capital Associates and William Gottlieb Real Estate from moving forward with their large commercial development on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District.

The decision prevents the developers from doing any exterior work on the buildings at 60-68 and 70-74 Gansevoort Street until an advocacy group’s appeal makes its way through the court. An appellate judge had temporarily stopped construction in April, pending the full panel vote. Representatives for the developers didn’t return messages seeking comment

The group, Save Gansevoort, had sued the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the developers in October, claiming that Landmarks improperly approved the project, which is expected to contain roughly 100,000 square feet of retail space. The group argued that Landmarks wrongly relied on a historic period that predated the area’s identity as a meat market district when it approved 60-74 Gansevoort Street. Landmarks approved the entire project — 46-74 Gansevoort Street — in June 2016.

The lawsuit was dismissed in March, but the group appealed the decision.
