A former attic at the top of a building along Central Park is now a triplex spanning 10,000 square feet.

The home is located atop the Hampshire House at 150 Central Park South, and developer Arnon Katz is behind the project, according to the New York Post. He had been looking for the mechanical system at the building and went upstairs to find it, where he saw the attic.

The Hampshire House is a historic building in the city, hosting famed tenants over the years including late opera singer Luciano Pavarotti and artist Frida Kahlo. Construction on it began in 1931, but it has not been landmarked because it was put together in pieces.

The lack of landmark status turned out to be a good thing for Katz’s plans.

“We got lucky,” he told the Post. “The co-op board was sophisticated and understood the value of design, and the Department of Buildings was also on board.”
