Alternative arts theatre inks 10-year lease in Clinton Hill

An alternative arts theatre and community center has defied the challenges of fundraising, and secured a lease at 18 Putnam Avenue in Brooklyn.

JACK, a small Clinton Hill based theatre known for experimental performances, signed a 10-year lease at the 2,700-square foot, single-story building, according to The New York Times. The performance venue will move from its current location at 505 1/2 Waverly Ave, a few blocks away.

The space was previously occupied by another nonprofit organization, the Green Hill Food Co-op, which moved into another property at 1083 Fulton Street last April.

The food co-op had been in a prolonged fight with the landlord, Renee Collymore, who had sought to evict the nonprofit after it allegedly refused to pay market rent. Her father bought the building from the city in 1984 for $4,500.

The building was also featured in a 2016 alternative film, “Women Who Kill,” where one of the characters worked at the food co-op. [NYT] — David Jeans
