Suzy Welch sells Hudson Valley estate for record price

Estate trade for well below ask still hit Dutchess County high mark

Suzy Welch may have pulled in much less than she wanted for her Hudson Valley estate, the sale still managed to set a record.

Welch sold her home at 124 Eden Knoll in Red Hook for $18.5 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. The identity of the buyers for the 290-acre estate was not revealed.

The sale narrowly surpassed a 2011 deal in Millbrook to become the most expensive deal in Dutchess County history, Compass agent Candy Anderson told the outlet. The record could have set a higher bar, however, as Welch listed the property in June for $25 million, the Hudson Valley’s second-most expensive listing at the time.

Known as Steen Valetje, the estate dates back to the mid-19th Century. Welch embarked on a restoration of the property after purchasing it for $16.5 million at the start of the pandemic.

The estate houses a 16,600-square-foot home with 10 bedrooms, nine bathrooms and three half baths. Welch updated the Internet and HVAC systems up to date, along with outfitting automated systems throughout the home.

Outside of the main residence, there are two four-bedroom guest houses and a four-bedroom carriage house, as well as a two-bedroom gate house.

The estate also has plentiful gardens, a tennis court, eight-stall horse stable, indoor and outdoor riding rings and a pool with a fully-equipped pool house. Permissions are in place for up to three docks and a mooring against the Hudson River.

William Astor Sr. gifted the estate to his daughter, Laura, who went on to marry Franklin Hughes Delano, President Franklin Roosevelt’s uncle. The home would remain in the family until 1966, a stark contrast from the two ownership changes in the past three years.

Welch has been busy in the tri-state luxury market recently. The author, journalist, television commentator and wife to the late General Electric boss Jack Welch last year listed her co-op at 834 Fifth Avenue in New York City for $25 million.

A month before that, she bought a mansion at 160 East 81st Street for $22.7 million.
