WEEKENDEDITION The latest trend in West Village boutique retail is pretty sweet. In the past seven months, at least three high-end candy shops have opened on Bleecker Street near Seventh Avenue, and more are on the way.

“You’ve basically got the best of all worlds — tourists, residential and commercial — all rolled into one; plus the profits are enormous, and the visibility is much wider than the Upper East or Upper West Side,” Faith Hope Consolo, chairman of the retail group at Douglas Elliman, told Crain’s.

Two of the most recent candy retailers to Open On Bleecker Street are Cynthia Rowley‘s CuRious Candy, and Sugar and Plumm, which could soon be followed by Leonidas, La Maison du Chocolat and Neuhaus, which are all scouting for space in the area.

“Usually, fashion follows food, but the trend we’re seeing with all of these candy stores is the reverse,” Consolo said. “It’s not the typical jelly-bean stores that are coming here, but the very specialized ones, and I think they treat candy just like another accessory. It’s the sweet handbag, it’s the sweet shoe, and it fits in perfectly with what the West Village has evolved to.” [Crain’s]Christopher Cameron
