Rentals in demand: Upper East Side, Chelsea share top spot

The Upper East Side tied with Chelsea for the most in-demand Manhattan neighborhood of the last week, according to Zumper, an apartment listings website. Other popular neighborhoods, in order, were Greenwich Village, the West Village, Hell’s Kitchen and Soho.

The prior week, Greenwich Village and the West Village led the pack. Renters were most often looking for one-bedroom apartments, which represented 35 percent of total inquiries, the Zumper data show. The median rent query for one-bedrooms overall was $2,100 per month.

“The searched prices for one- and three-bedroom apartments dropped 25 percent and 15 percent respectively, whereas studio and two-bedrooms increased slightly,” Zumper COO Taylor Glass-Moore told The Real Deal.

Studios and two-bedrooms each had 30 percent of the total market share, with a median inquiry of $1,700 and $2,900 respectively. Three-bedrooms again struck out with 5 percent and $3,400, the data show.

Methodology: Zumper determined the rankings by using a representative sample of emails and phone calls from renters interested in its Manhattan listings available during the week of Dec. 8.Mark Maurer
